Separated by about two weeks, Hurricanes Harvey and Irma had caused severe damage in Texas, Florida and Caribbean. Texas State Geography partnered with Humanity Road to model the communication landscape of social media before/after the hurricanes using Twitter data. Leaded by Alexander Savelyev, we have been collecting between 90 to 100% of all geolocated data that is generated on Twitter platform, with the resulting data stored in a growing digital archive. This project only shows the geo-tagged tweets with precise latitude and longitude. Despite the TxState team employed a strategic sampling method of Twitter API that mimics the firehose (i.e. not sampled) data, the twitter data itself is still subjected to sampling as well as spatial errors. The data used in this project have not screened out bots or other commercial/institutional users. Click on the above image or here to learn more.
